It is with great sadness we announce that one of the founders of the International Medical Geology Association (IMGA) and the International Symposium on Environmental Geochemistry (ISEG), Dr. Olle Selinus passed away on November 20, 2023 in Kalmar Hospital, Sweden at the age of 80.

The members of the IEHSC wish to bid farewell to this great scientist, colleague and friend.

He was born in Cardiff, Wales, in 1943. He graduated from Uppsala University in 1971 with a PhD in mineralogy-petrology. He then worked as a mining geologist in Sweden for several years. In 1971, he joined the Swedish Geological Survey (SGU), where he spent the rest of his career.

He was a pioneer in the field of medical geology, which studies the relationship between the geological environment and human health. His research focused on the effects of heavy metals, organic pollutants, and other geological factors on human health.

He was a leader in promoting medical geology internationally. He has been president of the IMGA since its founding in 2006. He was also a key organizer of the International Environmental Geochemistry Symposium, held every three years.

He was an outstanding scientist and an inspiring mentor to many young geologists. His work has had a significant impact on our understanding of the relationship between the geological environment and human health.

As IEHSC, we express our deepest condolences to his family and friends.
