Julian Ijumulana

Dr. Julian Ijumulana is a spatial data scientist and GIS expert holding a Ph.D. in Land and Water Resources Engineering from KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm-Sweden (2016-2022). He holds an MSc. In GIS and Earth Observation with specialization in Geoinformatics attained from the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) of Twente University, Netherlands (2008-2010). Dr. Julian further holds a BSc. Degree in Geomatics attained from the University of Dar es Salaam, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (2002-2006).

At the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), Dr. Julian does lecturing, research, and outreach programs in the College of Engineering and Technology (CoET). As a lecturer, he facilities the learning process among undergraduate and postgraduate students in various units of the University where he teaches undergraduate and postgraduate students in Civil Engineering, Geomatics, Mining Engineering, Engineering Geology, Architecture, Quantity Surveying, and Agricultural Engineering. As the researcher, Dr. Julian does multidisciplinary research in the field of Earth and Environmental sciences with much emphasis on Land and Water Resources degradation through natural processes. During the research, Dr. Julian focuses more on the spatial component of data science using modern geospatial tools and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. He has recently published high-quality papers in high-impact journals and peer-reviewed conference proceedings. Most of his publications focus more on the spatio-temporal variability of geogenic contaminants in drinking water sources and uncertainties imposed by this variability when seeking to supply safe water for drinking in naturally contaminated aquifers within the East African Rift Valley regions and volcanic areas of northern Tanzania. He is currently working on a Sida-funded DAFWAT research project (Sida Contribution 51170071, Project No. 2235), a collaborative research program (2015-2022) between KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden, and UDSM, Tanzania.

As a consultant, Dr. Julian participates in various outreach programs by providing high-quality consultancy services to the government, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and the private sector. Apart from research, Dr. Julian is a member of the Hydrogeology and Geoinformatics Divisions of the Geological Society of America (GSA), European Geoscience Union (EGU), and the retired President of the Institution of Surveyors of Tanzania (IST). Dr. Julian is also a member of the International Environmental and Health Sciences Consortium (IEHSC) since February 2022. Dr.Julian has over fifteen years of experience and has participated in several projects/studies in the areas of Cadastral/Legal Surveys, Topographical Surveys, Engineering Surveys, GPS/GNSS Surveying, Remote Sensing, Photogrammetry, and GIS applications.
