Collaborative Centers: NSUK – Jose A. Centeno International Center for Medical Geology Research

The Jose A. Centeno International Center for Medical Geology Research (JACMEDGEO), established at Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK) in Nigeria, stands as a global pioneer in the field of medical geology. As the first academic center of its kind in the world, JACMEDGEO plays a central role in advancing scientific understanding of the connections between geology, environmental factors, and public health.

JACMEDGEO seeks to become a Center of Excellence in medical geology, addressing global health challenges linked to geological and environmental factors such as dust, mineral exposure, and naturally occurring toxic elements.

The Center pursues this vision through:

  • Academic programs in undergraduate and graduate medical geology education
  • Promoting cutting-edge research on geologic influences on human and animal health
  • Supporting scientific collaboration across national and international networks
  • Serving as a platform for knowledge exchange through workshops, conferences, publications, and outreach

A Landmark Initiative in Africa

The creation of the Medical Geology Chair and the JACMEDGEO Center was made possible by the leadership of NSUK Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mohammed Suleiman, and honors Dr. José A. Centeno, former President of the International Medical Geology Association (IMGA) and one of the field’s founders.

Guided by Dr. Nghargbu K’tso, a leading expert in Nigeria, the Center focuses on building research capacity, developing academic programs, and creating collaborative networks that address health risks arising from geological processes and exposures such as mining activities.
