Contaminated soils can pose risks to human health, but total contaminant concentrations alone do not necessarily reflect actual exposure. Environmental geochemistry controls how contaminants behave in soil, influencing their mobility, bioaccessibility, and potential uptake by the human body.This talk will discuss how geochemical processes and bioaccessibility data can improve human health risk assessments and support more informed risk management decisions. Drawing on case studies from contaminated areas and recent advances in the field, this integrated approach provides a more realistic understanding of human exposure and supports effective protection of public health.
