IEHSC Webinar Series 2026
The International Environmental and Health Sciences Consortium (IEHSC) is pleased to announce the opening lecture of its 2026 Webinar Series on Medical Geology and Environmental Health.
Date: April 15, 2026
Time: 1:00 PM UTC
Speaker: Prof. Bob Finkelman, The University of Texas at Dallas, USA
Lecture Title: “Be Careful! Drinking Aquifer Water Could Kill You”
This webinar is free of charge and open to researchers, students, professionals, and all those interested in water quality, groundwater contamination, environmental health, and medical geology.
Be careful! Drinking aquifer water could kill you.
Almost half of the world’s population, including as many as 90 million people in the U.S., rely on ground water to drink, feed their animals, and water their crops. Excluding anthropogenic contamination, the major natural contaminant concerns are arsenic and fluorine levels. However, there is another, more subtle killer in ground water. That is naturally occurring organic contaminants that are being leached by aquifers from associated low-rank coals, Ingestion of minute concentrations of these compounds over a period of decades have killed thousands of people in the Balkans and a similar situation exists in the southwest US, primarily in the state in which I live – Texas, as well as in NW Louisiana and SW Arkansas. Does this situation occur elsewhere?
Prof. Bob Finkelman is an internationally recognized scientist known for his work in coal chemistry and Medical Geology. After 32 years with the U.S. Geological Survey, he became a Research Professor in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Texas at Dallas.
His academic background includes geology, geochemistry, and chemistry, and his career has included research, teaching, and invited lectures at universities and scientific meetings around the world. He is the author of more than 900 publications, including four books on Medical Geology, and has been invited to speak in more than 50 countries.
We invite all those interested in medical geology, environmental exposure, and groundwater quality to join this important session and share it with colleagues and students.
