🕊️ In Memoriam: Dr. Olle Selinus (1943–2023)

Dr. Olle Selinus (1943–2023)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Olle Selinus, a pioneer in the field of Medical Geology, who passed away on November 20, 2023, at Kalmar Hospital, Sweden, at the age of 80.

Dr. Selinus was one of the founders of the International Medical Geology Association (IMGA) and the International Symposium on Environmental Geochemistry (ISEG). His remarkable contributions laid the foundation for what Medical Geology is today—a dynamic, multidisciplinary field exploring the interactions between geological environments and human health.

Born in Cardiff, Wales, in 1943, Dr. Selinus earned his PhD in Mineralogy and Petrology from Uppsala University in 1971. After working as a mining geologist, he joined the Swedish Geological Survey (SGU), where he continued his career and research until retirement.

Throughout his career, he investigated the health impacts of heavy metals, organic pollutants, and other environmental geochemical factors. As an international leader, he served as the President of the IMGA from its foundation in 2006 and was instrumental in organizing the ISEG conferences held every three years.

Dr. Selinus was not only a brilliant scientist but also an inspiring mentor, a generous colleague, and a true advocate for scientific collaboration across borders.
